چکیده

The aim of belief merging is to merge conflicting information while preserving as much of it as possible. Most proposals in the literature work with knowledge bases expressed in propositional logic. We propose a new framework for merging knowledge bases expressed in (subsets of) first-order logic. Dilation operators (a concept originally introduced by Bloch and Lang) are employed and developed, and by combining them with the concept of comparison orderings we obtain a framework that is driven by model-based intuitions but that can be implemented in a syntax-based manner. We demonstrate specific dilation operators and comparison orderings for use in applications. The notion of generalised consistency is introduced in order to support integrity constraints as well as other, more general, notions of consistency. We also show how postulates from the literature on belief merging translate into our framework and provide the conditions that dilation operators and comparison orderings must satisfy in order for the respective merging operators to satisfy the new postulates.

Aggregating Judgements by Merging Evidence

The theory of belief revision and merging has recently been applied to judgement aggregation. In this paper I argue that judgements are best aggregated by merging the evidence on which they are based, rather than by directly merging the judgements themselves. This leads to a threestep strategy for judgement aggregation. First, merge the evidence bases of the various agents using some method of ...

A Stratification-based Approach for Inconsistency Handling in Description Logics

Inconsistency handling is a central problem in many knowledge representation fields, such as belief revision, belief merging. Many approaches have been proposed to handle inconsistency in ontologies. In this paper, we propose a stratification-based approach for inconsistency handling in description logics (DLs), a family of ontology languages. This approach consists of two steps. In the first s...

On the Merit of Selecting Different Belief Merging Operators

Belief merging operators combine multiple belief bases (a profile) into a collective one. When the conjunction of belief bases is consistent, all the operators agree on the result. However, if the conjunction of belief bases is inconsistent, the results vary between operators. There is no formal manner to measure the results and decide on which operator to select. So, in this paper we propose t...

Belief Merging using Partial Satisfactibility: cases studies

Merging operators aim at defining the beliefs or goals of a group of agents from the beliefs or goals of each member of the group. Several model-based propositional belief merging operators have been proposed which use propositional satisfaction. In this paper we introduce the notion of partial satisfactibility which is an alternative way of measure the satisfaction of a formula since this noti...

Merging Rules: Preliminary Version

In this paper we consider the merging of rules or conditionals. In contrast to other approaches, we do not invent a new approach from scratch, for one particular kind of rule, but we are interested in ways to generalize existing revision and merging operators from belief merging to rule merging. First, we study ways to merge rules based on only a notion of consistency of a set of rules, and ill...
